Understanding the IgM/IgG Antibody Test

When we get an infection like COVID-19 antibodies will be secreted which are part of our immune system, they bind to the virus and signal to the rest of the immune system to clear the infection. Immunoglobulin M (IgM) provides the first line of defense, acting as an early sign of infection. Immunoglobulin (IgG) is stimulated later, creating a more specific and stronger reaction against the virus. Thus this combined antibody test can provide information of the stage of infection; COVID-19 IgM antibodies tend to indicate a recent exposure to COVID-19, whereas detection of COVID-19 IgG antibodies indicates a later stage of infection.
